The Minister of Justice presented Juvenile Justice Code to the students

On December 15, 2015 the Juvenile Justice Code presentation was held at Guram Tavartkladze Teaching University.

The presentation was attended by the University Law, Business Administration, Social Sciences faculty, students and academic staff.

The presentation of the code was led by the Minister of Justice, Mrs. Tea Tsulukiani.

According to the minister, the juvenile code under eighteen years old adolescents envisages the establishment of the specialized, European standard judicial system in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Her main innovation is the creation of justice specialized institutions to the under eighteen years old persons’.

After the enactment of this code there will be specialized police officers, investigators, prosecutors and judges to investigate and discuss the cases of children in Georgia.

The new code incorporates in a single legislative act juvenile responsibility, administrative, criminal law procedure the other issues regulatory norms and rules of penitentiary, the new standards and mechanisms to protect the rights of juveniles.

Imprisonment as the use of punishment will be possible only in extreme cases, grave and especially grave crimes with respect to the juveniles.

According to the new code from the submission of the charges to the Pretrial hearing, the detention period of child will be reduces from 60 to 40 days, criminal records will be cleared off just after the completion of the sentence.

However, if previously convicted juvenile repeteadly commits crime his conviction is taken into account during the sentencing.

The main objective of the Code is to give a chance of re-socialization of juveniles.
